Celebrating 40 years of the Independent Living Centre – and an Exciting New Chapter ahead!

2026 marks a major milestone for the Independent Living Centre as we celebrate 40 years of helping people across Devon live safely, independently, and confidently in their own homes.

Since being opened on 19 May 1986 by Lieutenant General Sir Steuart R. Pringle, the Centre has grown into a trusted, free resource, offering expert, impartial advice on daily living equipment, assistive technology, and home adaptations. Over four decades, our team of skilled NHS Therapists and dedicated staff have helped tens of thousands of people find everyday solutions that make a real difference.

As we celebrate this landmark year, we’re also looking to the future.

We are delighted to announce that Archie O’Connell has been appointed as the new Independent Living Centre Therapy Service Lead, taking over from Lucy Clark, who will be retiring in May 2026.

Lucy’s exceptional leadership, passion, and commitment have helped to shape the Centre into the respected and innovative service it is today. Her influence on staff, service development, and the wider community has been profound, and she leaves a legacy of quality, compassion, and forward-thinking practice. She will be greatly missed, and we wish her every joy in her retirement.

As Archie steps into his new role, we look forward to an exciting new chapter – building on strong foundations while continuing to champion independence, accessibility, and person-centred support across Devon.
